Abstract

The contemporary teacher is a learning leader, knowledgeable of learners’ needs now and in the future. He/she maintains a clear view of the future in which his/her children will contribute to their personal well-being, community well-being and national well-being. The teacher leads children in becoming that of which they are capable by knowing them as the basis of critically and creatively designing learning for them. The teacher builds a high-functioning learning ecosystem. Individuals contribute to and receive benefits from the ecosystem in which there is a synergy for greater output than if individuals were to work on their own. The teacher works with the diversity of individuals and the group toward equity for all. This discussion examines the teacher’s role in schooling that acknowledges the focus on the learner and learning and seeks to challenge readers to compare teachers as leaders and teachers as those who serve.
