The Effectiveness of Empty Seats Technique in Resolving Verbal Communication Difficulties at SMP N 31 Banjarmasin

Abstract


In school enviroment, verbal communication is a main support in learning activity. However, it often happened that students are tend to have difficulties in verbal communication such as miscommunication that lead to a failure in making a relation, conflict, also may disturb thinking process. Those were happen because of disruption in communicating such as articulating, voice, accuracy and fluency problem when speaking, aslo verbal language problem. Therefore, it is needed to develop a technique to overcome those problems. One of many ways is to a individual counseling service using empty seats technique approach branch from Gestalt theory. The aim of the research was to find the effectiveness of this counseling technique in order to resolve verbal communication difficulties from students of VII grande in SMP Negeri 31 Banjarmasin. This was a quantitative research with experimental research. The research was help in SMPN 31 Banjarmasin. The population of the research was VII grade students with total 120 students. The sample of the research was aqcuired through inclusion criteria with purposice sampling technique, with amount of 8 people. The instrument of the research andd data collection was in form of measurement sclae of verbal communication difficulties. The data were analyzed using t-test formula. Based on the data obtained from the testing of thit> ttab 0.95% (5.60> 3.182), then HO rejected, which means there are different levels of verbal communication difficulty percentage of students before being given a counseling by using empty seats technique and after given a counseling. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the individual counseling with an empty seats technique is effective in overcoming the difficulties of verbal communication. Therefore, the counselor were suggested to apply the empty seats technique in overcoming difficulties in verbal communication of the students.
