WHERE IS YOUR CIRCLE? AND, WHAT IS YOUR INFLUENCE?
Students are often taught that good digital citizenship is a set of values and behaviors that they should aspire to--and that is correct--but that is merely the starting point. Much of the discussion around Internet usage for youth and younger adults centers around the negatives--bullying, identity theft, stalking, and loss of in-person connections. While all of these are serious issues which may affect some or all of you at some point in your lives, I would prefer to focus on being our best online. We can be models of good and effective behavior and use ICT tools to be a positive influence for yourself and for others through principled choices, openness, and engagement. Where and how do you position yourself online, and how does that create a better community?
- 2. Made Hery Santosa, Ph.D. (Plenary speaker)
The Head of Collaboration Affairs and Information Systems in Post Graduate Program of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, Bali
YOU ARE NOT A SILO, WHY DO YOU HAVE A FINSTA?
Twenty-first century skills have been changing the way millennials and Gen Z learn and interact in their word – both offline and online. High connections with technology may ease everyone, especially screenagers and digital natives in their everyday lives. Students google looking for answers in late evenings to submit their assignments, sometimes without critically analysing the information. People create contents generated from existing apps and try to be the ‘first’ in content creation. Some try to show the ‘best’ images in the online world, going beyong their inner circle. The pressure of perfection has become a hidden epidemic in our society and ‘finsta’ – a fake Instagram account also starts to emerge among youngsters. With borderless unlimited storage of information, will they possess digital literacy? With high analytical thinking skills? Or will they be silos?
Key words: digital natives, gen Y, gen Z, millennials, digital literacy, ‘finstas’, silo
