The Current Rise of MOOC in Potentially Raising Indonesian Tertiary Education Quality
Last modified: 2018-07-05
Abstract
The soaring tuition fee of Indonesian tertiary education which results in a huge qualification gap among workforce has always been the target of monumental public criticism, discussion and debate. Past scholarly studies found that the primary reason for Indonesians giving up their higher education was financial constraints which further resulted in mediocre job skills. An understanding of a potential alternative medium of education with the benefit overweighing the cost may help the government to make holistic educational service available to more people. This study reveals that the use of Massive Open Online Course potentially encourages more Indonesians to access tertiary education especially for those who lack time and the budget, and allows the government to raise their sensitivity to flexibility and fee with regard to higher education. The tremendous user increase of various MOOC platforms throughout this decade and the growing number of universities providing online lectures clearly demonstrate the enthusiasm of many university personnel, not to mention Indonesian universities, to combine the power of education with technology for brighter Indonesian future.
